There's an alarming article at the redorbit.com website on the subject of male sexual health. According to this article, a survey found that young gay men between the ages of 18 and 24 are using the Internet to meet sexual partners and have unprotected anal intercourse with them. The results of the survey indicate that having more ways to meet partners has lead to an increase in both protected and unprotected sex.
Recent reports show rising rates of HIV among gay men. In the United States, the estimated number of HIV cases among young men rose from 1763 in 1999 to 2443 in 2003. Male-male sexual contact accounts for approximately 74% of HIV diagnoses among young men.
It seems that the younger generation of gay men are somewhat lacking in education when it comes to male sexual health. Perhaps they don’t always use precautions because they are to young to remember the HIV epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s. These rising HIV rates are terrifying. They indicate that the United States needs an intensive education program for young people. They need to know that the only way to protect male sexual health is to use a condom.
